🏝️ 15 New Features Coming in Animal Crossing: New Horizons Version 3.0

After years of silence following what Nintendo once called the “final” update, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting a massive surprise. Version 3.0 is officially on the way—bringing a wave of new features, quality-of-life upgrades, and creative tools that expand the game in ways fans have been asking for since launch.

The Version 3.0 update launches January 15, 2026, and it will be free for all players on both the original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside the free update, Nintendo is also releasing a paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack, which adds system-exclusive features such as 4K visuals and mouse controls.

Here’s a full breakdown of everything coming in Animal Crossing: New Horizons Version 3.0.

🚤 Kapp’n’s Resort Hotel Opens

The headline feature of Version 3.0 is the introduction of Kapp’n’s Resort Hotel. This brand-new facility is attached directly to the island dock, expanding the area where Kapp’n currently offers boat tours.

Inside the hotel, Kapp’n’s family members help run daily operations. Players will find:

  • A shop selling exclusive items
  • Outfit mannequins for guest styling
  • A front desk where guest room decorations are managed

The Resort Hotel serves as the central hub for several new gameplay systems introduced in the update.

🛏️ Decorate Hotel Rooms for Guests

Decorating a hotel guest room Completed themed hotel room

One of the Resort Hotel’s main activities is decorating guest rooms. Villagers request themed rooms—such as a Seaside Room—and players must decorate them using a mix of newly introduced furniture and items they already own.

Successfully completing a room earns a new currency called Hotel Tickets. For example, decorating a Seaside Room for a guest has been shown to reward 200 Hotel Tickets.

While this system may feel familiar to players of the Happy Home Paradise DLC, Nintendo has hinted that there may be additional layers and mechanics still to be revealed.

🛠️ Craft Island Goods for Tom Nook

Tom Nook crafting kiosk

Hotel Tickets can also be earned through a new Tom Nook–operated kiosk located near Kapp’n’s dock.

At this kiosk, players receive rotating requests to craft special island goods using DIY recipes. Completing these crafting requests provides another consistent way to earn Hotel Tickets, tying traditional crafting gameplay directly into the new hotel system.

🎁 Spend Hotel Tickets on New Items

Hotel souvenir shop items Exclusive Version 3.0 décor items

Hotel Tickets are spent inside the Resort Hotel at a souvenir shop run by Grams. This shop features brand-new item sets introduced in Version 3.0, including:

  • Hotel-themed furniture and clothing
  • Tubular-themed items
  • Artful-themed items
  • Kiddie-themed items
  • Additional exclusive décor sets

This gated reward system mirrors past Animal Crossing updates, such as MEOW Coupons in New Leaf and Poki in Happy Home Paradise, encouraging players to engage with new content to unlock new rewards.

👗 Decorate Hotel Outfit Mannequins

Inside the Resort Hotel, players can also customize two outfit mannequins. These mannequins allow players to design outfits that hotel guests can wear around the island.

A standout feature here is multiplayer compatibility—visiting friends can wear these hotel outfits, making it easy to coordinate matching looks for group photos and events.

🌙 Slumber Islands: Animal Crossing’s Creative Mode

Slumber Island creative tools Building freely on a Slumber Island

One of the biggest additions in Version 3.0 is the introduction of Slumber Islands. These dream-like islands function as a creative sandbox, giving players powerful tools for designing without restrictions.

On Slumber Islands, players can:

  • Place any previously owned furniture directly from a menu
  • Instantly grow trees and plants to any stage
  • Install bridges and inclines easily
  • Control time of day and weather
  • Resize the island to small or medium layouts

While some details are still unconfirmed, Slumber Islands appear to be Nintendo’s official take on a creative mode for Animal Crossing.

🤝 Build and Decorate Online with Friends

Slumber Islands also introduce real-time multiplayer building. Players can invite:

  • Up to 11 friends on Nintendo Switch 2
  • Up to 7 friends on the original Nintendo Switch

All invited players can decorate and build together on the same Slumber Island, a first for the Animal Crossing series and a major step forward for collaborative play.

🏝️ Create Up to Three Slumber Islands

Multiple Slumber Islands

Instead of being limited to a single creative space, players can create and decorate up to three Slumber Islands at once.

This solves a long-standing frustration of being locked into one island design per console, allowing players to experiment with themed builds without affecting their main island.

🎮 Unlock Retro Nintendo Products and Games

Retro Nintendo items Playable Nintendo systems

After progressing far enough with Resort Hotel activities, players can unlock retro Nintendo-themed furniture at the souvenir shop, including Ultra Hand, Love Tester, and the Famicom.

With an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, some of these retro systems are even playable inside Animal Crossing, adding a nostalgic bonus to the update.

🧱 LEGO Collaboration Items

Version 3.0 introduces a LEGO-themed furniture and clothing collaboration. These items will appear in the Promotion tab of Nook Shopping, similar to the Super Mario collaboration items released in 2021.

🗡️ Zelda Villagers and Furniture Return via Amiibo

Zelda collaboration content

The Legend of Zelda collaboration makes a return through amiibo support, unlocking themed furniture, clothing, and villagers.

🦑 Splatoon Villagers and Furniture via Amiibo

Splatoon collaboration content

Splatoon fans can unlock returning villagers and themed items using compatible amiibo figures.

🧰 Craft DIY Items in Bulk

Bulk DIY crafting

Instead of crafting items one at a time, players can now craft multiple items in a single action—a long-requested quality-of-life improvement.

📦 Expand Home Storage to 9,000 Items

Expanded storage upgrade

Home storage limits are getting a major boost, expanding first to 7,000 items and eventually to 9,000 items, including the ability to store grown trees and plants.

🔄 Island Cleanup with Resetti Reset Service

Resetti cleanup service

Resetti makes his long-awaited return with a powerful island cleanup service, allowing players to remove furniture, flowers, and custom designs from selected areas or the entire island.

📅 Release Details

All features listed above will be available for free in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Version 3.0 update, launching January 15, 2026, for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 players.
